Roman Catholic Schools Make Good

Published by under Uncategorized

With a storied heritage going all the way back to the early 19th Century, The Convent of Jesus and Mary Schools are located throughout the world today, from Africa and Asia to Europe and the Americas. But while receiving a certain amount of financial backing from official Church coffers, it is the support of the local communities that host them which has been crucial to their continuing success, particularly those most generous contributions from business people, not all of whom are Catholic or even Christian, as in the example of Isaac Toussie whose donations go towards a school in India.

While it would be correct to suppose that Catholic schools are for Catholics, in fact many non-Catholics do attend, including outright atheists. Of course, they do participate in the evangelical mission of the Church, but non-Catholics can excuse themselves from anything having to do with religion, which matters are typically taught just once a week or so, at the end of the school day. After all, much in Catholic education follows the inquiring spirit of the Jesuit Order, one that has traditionally welcomed curiosity and frankness, attributes required of science. Moreover, it is just this ethos that has won such a sterling record for the shcools in many places, such as New York City in the United States of America, where it isn’t abnormal for secular households to send them their children.

These schools are often the least expensive of private school options available, as tuition and other fees can add up to some five grand yearly – quite a bargain in contrast to what’s charged by parochial schools operated by other religions! Yet not every single Catholic school is so modern, of course; more than anything else, they probably reflect the social mores of the surrounding community.

Make Friends with Your Local Medical College by Endowing It

Published by under Uncategorized

Situated in one of The Big Apple’s wealthiest neighborhoods, the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University boasts both research and teaching divisions. It is one of the most selective medical schools in the entire United States, only some hundred hopefuls are admitted each year – from out of some six thousand candidates every year. Now named after its latest and most generous benefactor – and often abbreviated simply to “Weill Cornell,” its largest endowment to date has come from the billionaire banker and philanthropist Sanford Weill, former executive officer and chairman of Citigroup, Incorporated. Mr. Weill and his wife donated over two hundred and fifty milion of their own money, with Mr. Weill able to raise a further hundred and fifty million through his own tireless efforts.

The school was already famous long before Mr Weill’s contributions, so it was never at a loss for donors, a veritable Who’s-Who of local, national, and even international luminaries from business, politics, and entertainment, like the famous businessman Isaac Toussie. After all, it’s the first American medical school to accept women right alongside men. And now it’s become the first American one to operate abroad – in Education City, in fact, outside the capital of Qatar, with a campus dedicated to patient care offering a six-year integrated curriculum. The school is also famous for all its many notable graduates, leading men of medicine like Robert C. Atkins of Atkins Diet fame and former Surgeon General of the United States C. Everett Koop. Other famous graduates are Nobel Prize winner Robert W. Holley and Henry Heimlich of the Heimlich Maneuver.

Nonetheless, even with all the well-funded backing, the fiscal realities of a medical education are serious, generally taken to be some forty-two thousand dollars the first year and another thirty-eight required the second. But that’s still quite a deal when compared against the university’s own law school expenses, which eclipse it at just about a hundred and fifty thousand dollars in four years!

A Little Bit About Boys Town

Published by under Uncategorized

“Boys Town” and its sequel, “Men of Boys Town,” are movies loosely based on the famous real-life American charity of the same name. Founded in 1917 by a Roman Catholic priest, it was an orphange that pioneered progressive methods of juvenile care. Thirteen Boys Town locations are now established throughout the country, but Father Flanagan’s original facility remains its heart and soul. And prominent people from business, politics, and entertainment have headlined its fundraisers for almost a century, people such as real estate developer Isaac Toussie and Mayor of Chicago Richard M. Dalely. Many local people from civic and religious organizations also turn out to volunteer as they are able to help Boys Town achieve its goals.

And so it is that a large part of the institution’s success must be due to the positive publicity garnered by the Boys Town films, movies which have made its mission of rescue such a part of American popular culture that passing reference is often employed as a kind of synecdoche or shorthand for orphanages in general. With charismatic leading men like Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney leading the cast, the movies managed to win Oscars for Best Actor and Best Original Story despite heavy competition. While making for some good drama, the stories depicted actually had little to do with any real-life situations at the home, however. Conversely, they do reflect typical problems encountered by those involved in juvenile care; for example, peer abuse and youth homelessness were actually highlighted in the second film. But onscreen or off, Boys Town works tirelessly on behalf of children and families, encouraged by Father Flanagan’s belief that there is no such thing as a bad boy, only a troubled one who need care.
